Area briefs: Hawkins to run for Houston
WINCHESTER — James Wood senior Amber Hawkins will compete at the University of Houston next year on a partial scholarship for cross country and track and field, according to Colonels cross country coach Mike Onda.
Hawkins was The Winchester Star Cross Country Runner of the Year this fall as a result of finishing fourth at the Group AA state meet and winning the Region II and Northwestern District crowns. In the spring for track, Hawkins placed second in Group AA in the 1,600 meters and fourth in the 3,200.
Hawkins will sign her national letter of intent to compete for the Division I Conference USA school on Wednesday at James Wood High School.
James Wood football player Chris Alaniz will also sign his letter of intent to play for Norfolk State University on Wednesday.
Eagles 50, Rams 28
STRASBURG — Clarke County outscored Strasburg 18-4 in the first quarter en route to a 50-28 Bull Run District victory Thursday.
The Eagles (16-4, 9-3 Bull Run) were led by Sydney Chrane (17 points, seven rebounds, two assists, three steals, two blocks), Anna Blue Catlett (15 points, nine rebounds, two assists, three steals), Becky Smith (12 points, five rebounds) and Stephanie Nelson (four steals, three rebounds).
