Area briefs: Millbrook girls roll in opener

ASHBURN — The Millbrook girls’ basketball team extended its state-record winning streak to 81 games with a season-opening 76-22 non-district win over Briar Woods Tuesday night.

The Pioneers (1-0), winners of three consecutive state titles, led 18-6 after one quarter and 39-8 at the half.

Millbrook was led by Brenna Cook (16 points), Brooke Borlie (15 points), Mia Vandertoorn (12 points) and Casey Ackerman (10 points).

Patriots 67, Dragons 27

STEPHENS CITY — Shenandoah Valley Christian Academy broke open a 21-17 game by outscoring Stuart Hall 30-2 in the third quarter en route to winning its season and VACA opener Tuesday.

The Patriots (1-0) were led by senior and Millbrook transfer Amanda Barlow, who recorded 25 points, 12 rebounds and seven steals; Carol Bartholomew (11 points, eight rebounds); Shannon Conradi (12 points, six rebounds); Kayla Freemire (five points, six steals); Emma Culler (five rebounds); and Hannah McGann (four steals).

Patriots 64, Dragons 37

STEPHENS CITY — A 16-2 first quarter sparked Shenandoah Valley Christian Academy to an easy win over visiting Stuart Hall in its season opener Tuesday evening.

SVCA (1-0, 1-0 VACA) got a game-high 31 points and five rebounds from junior guard Evan Hotek and Mike Powell added 14 points in the win.

Colonels 80, Wolverines 65

PURCELLVILLE — Michael Carter scored 15 points to lead four James Wood players in double figures as the Colonels opened the season with a victory over Woodgrove Tuesday night.

Ryland Williams added 11 points, nine rebounds and five assists, and Nick Foura and Peyton Crickman scored 10 apiece for James Wood.

The Colonels connected on 16 3-pointers in the victory. Cam Butler added eight points and 11 assists and Brett Lewin chipped in with eight points and 11 rebounds.

Sosnoskie acquired by Orioles

WINCHESTER — Buddy Sosnoskie, a former player for the Winchester Post 21 American Legion baseball team, has had his contract purchased by the Baltimore Orioles, according to the website of the Fargo-Moorhead Redhawks.

The 23-year-old Sosnoskie played 53 games this summer with Fargo-Moorhead, a member of American Association of Independent Baseball. Sosnoskie batted .339 with 18 doubles, two triples, two home runs, 31 RBIs and 35 runs scored. He stole nine bases and posted a .357 on-base percentage.

Sosnoskie, now an outfielder, played for Winchester Post 21 in 2005-2006. Sosnoskie finished his playing career at Francis Marion this past spring, two years after hitting 347 with 13 home runs and 48 RBI as a sophomore at Virginia Tech. Sosnoskie went to high school at Notre Dame (now Middleburg) Academy.
