Area briefs: Millbrook, SVCA girls to face off for tourney title

STERLING — The Millbrook and Shenandoah Valley Christian Academy girls’ basketball teams will meet in the championship game of the Titan Tip-Off Classic at Dominion High School after each won their semifinal games Monday.

The championship will take place at 7:45 p.m. Wednesday.

In the season opener for each team, Millbrook beat Herndon 66-40 and SVCA beat Dominion 46-29.

The Pioneers trailed 13-12 after one quarter against Herndon, but Millbrook outscored the Hornets 39-15 in the middle two quarters to take control.

Making her Millbrook debut after earning Winchester Star Girls’ Basketball Player of the Year honors as a freshman at Sherando, Pioneers sophomore Lauren Reed led the way with 15 points. Brenna Cook, Joneisha Cain and Elizabeth McDonald each had 12 points for Millbrook.

SVCA led just 19-17 at the half, but the Patriots pulled away by outscoring Dominion 27-12 in the second half.

The Patriots were led by Samantha Yarnall (18 points, six rebounds and five steals), Grace Snyder (nine points) and Hannah McGann (eight points, three assists).

Gobblers 57, Warriors 40

BROADWAY — Sherando was outscored 34-18 in the middle two quarters in losing its season opener to Broadway in non-district action Monday.

Sherando was led by Jessica Hakel (15 points) and Heidi Brown (12) while Broadway received 20 points from Brianna Cook.


Vikings 64, Pioneers 56

PURCELLVILLE — Millbrook rallied from a 40-19 halftime deficit but came up just short in a season-opening loss to Loudoun Valley in non-district action Monday.

The Pioneers were led by Chris Oates (18 points and five rebounds) and Zach Harrell (17 points and eight assists).
