Area briefs: SU’s Thompson, Paul earn major VaSID accolades
NEWPORT NEWS — Two Shenandoah University baseball student-athletes earned VaSID major honors in selections announced Thursday afternoon by the organization.
Rising senior Michael Paul was named as the College Division Player of the Year while rising junior Darrell Thompson shared Pitcher of the Year honors with Ferrum’s Jake Perkins.
Both men were also named first team All-State.
Thompson’s classmate, Billy Arens, rounded out the SU selections with a second team accolade at shortstop.
The major awards cap outstanding seasons for both Paul and Thompson.
Paul was previously named second team All-America by both the ABCA and D3baseball.com, first team Academic All-America and also earned three different regional or league Player of the Year honors.
Thompson, the Hornets top starter, was previously named ODAC Pitcher of the Year and All-South Region by the ABCA and D3baseball.com.
Arens was a first team All-ODAC and a third team All-South Region pick from both the ABCA and D3baseball.com earlier this season.
VALLEY BASEBALL LEAGUE
Royals 3, Generals 2
WAYNESBORO — Winchester capitalized on a pair of Waynesboro errors in the top of the ninth to rally for a 3-2 Valley Baseball League victory Thursday night.
Winchester (6-8) trailed 2-0 going into the ninth inning, but the Royals’ Jerry Downs doubled and then stole third to get the rally going. Michael Landestoy walked, and Zachary Carter (1 for 4 with an RBI) reached on an error, allowing Downs to score. Landestoy scored the Royals’ second run after Wesley Hoover reached on an error to tie it.
Winchester’s Corey Chafin (1 for 4) doubled to left to score Carter with the go-ahead run.
Royals reliever Lucas Mould struck out two in a scoreless bottom of the ninth to seal the victory. Winchester’s Michael Carpenter (2-1) got the win, allowing just one hit while striking out two in three scoreless innings of relief.
