Athlete Spotlight: SVCA soccer player Bennett Heidelberger
Shenandoah Valley Christian Academy 17-year-old senior
Position: Center attacking midfielder
Parents: Toddy and Dana Heidelberger
Nicknames: A lot of my relatives call me “Ben” but that’s about it.
What you love about soccer: I love that it’s not like one guy can go out there and make the difference, everyone has to do their part. The whole team makes the difference.
Biggest strength and weakness in soccer: [Strength] I see the field pretty well and I know when our two outside wings are making their runs through so I can get the ball to do them. [Weakness] I think I need to work on getting the ball off my foot faster, sometimes I dribble too much or hold onto it.
Funniest person on the team: Min-Yung Jung. He’s the only Korean guy on our team and he basically does whatever he wants and is always making jokes.
Something people may not know about Coach Dustin Wheelock: Dustin’s always wanted to own and ride a moped. We make fun of him for it.
Most memorable moment in soccer: Probably this year right before our game against our rivals Fresta Valley when I opened my acceptance letter to Belmont University. You really want to go out and win the game after that and we beat them 4-1 on their Homecoming.
Most embarrassing moment in soccer: Freshman year our goalie was punting the ball and for some reason I thought the play had been stopped, so I just caught the ball with both my hands and got called for a handball.
Favorite athlete: [Redskins quarterback] Robert Griffin III because he’s shown he can persevere after he tore his ACL last season.
Favorite sports team: Washington Redskins
Three people you can have dinner with, dead or alive: [Singer] Taylor Swift because she’s pretty talented and good looking; [writer] J.R.R. Tolkien because I really like “Lord of the Rings” and “The Screwtape Letters”; and my friend [former Millbrook soccer player] William Schmid.
Favorite Quote: “Those who trust in the Lord will renew their strength, they will soar on wings like eagles.” — Isaiah 40:31
Favorite place to eat in town: I would go to Sucilee’s [House of Thai] and I would get the mango sushi rolls. I love sushi and mangos too.
Pregame routine/ritual: I like to get to the field early if I can and just sit down on the bench and look out at the field.
Plans after high school: I want to major in Music Business (at Belmont) which is like a business major with a music emphasis. As far as soccer goes, I’ll probably play intramurals in college.
