Business started in basement among state’s fastest growing
WINCHESTER — When Nathan Laing and Bryan Marion started operating a business out of a Winchester basement 12 years ago, they never imagined they would be where they are now.
Their city-based business, Direct Title Solutions, was named the 32nd-fastest-growing business in the state by Virginia Business magazine in its March issue.
Direct Title, which is located on North Braddock Street and has 20 employees, specializes in title research, document retrieval, and recording services in the real estate market, as well as commercial and residential settlements.
The Virginia Business rankings are based on revenue growth rates from 2007 to 2010. Direct Title’s revenue grew by 228 percent during those four years, although Laing, the company’s vice president, and Marion, the president, wouldn’t reveal dollar figures.
Both Winchester natives, Laing, 35, and Marion, 34, said they’ve benefited from offering a full range of title services, while most other title companies focus on one area.
Direct Title started out operating solely in the Northern Virginia and Northern Shenandoah Valley areas but has grown into a statewide business.
Laing and Marion aren’t planning on taking their feet off the gas, as they’d like to expand soon to other states.
Their recent success has made them think back on those first stressful days in Laing’s basement, which they call “the dark ages.”
“I don’t even think there was a thought other than staying afloat and getting some sleep,” Marion said.
They’re still not getting a ton of sleep, but they’re far from sinking.
