WINCHESTER — Trex Co. Inc., the city-based manufacturer of non-wood decking and outdoor products, is drawing accolades for being green.

Ronald W. Kaplan, the company’s chairman, president and CEO, was recently awarded the Green Company Executive Award from Pennsylvania-based Emerald Asset Management, according to a Trex press release.

The honor was part of the investment management company’s 13th annual “E-3 Awards,” which recognize entrepreneurship and a commitment to excellence among successful business leaders.

Kaplan received the award at the 20th annual Emerald Groundhog Day Investment Forum in Philadelphia on Feb. 7.

“It is always rewarding to have your work recognized by industry experts,” Kaplan said in a news release. “...As an industry leader, we feel an obligation to set the standard for eco-friendly outdoor living products and manufacturing processes and to help solve today’s environmental challenges.”

Kaplan joined Trex in 2008, and under his leadership, it became the first company in the wood-alternative decking industry to receive an independent verification that at least 94.5 percent of its wood-alternative products were comprised of recycled content.

Each year, Trex keeps more than 400 million pounds of plastic and wood scrap out of landfills.
