The Winchester Star

Jeff Chamberlin, of Winchester, holds a photo of the Dinkle house as he stands at the site of the home off Berryville Pike, in what is now the Gateway Plaza shopping center.
Chamberlin found this photograph of the Dinkle house, a farm home that was factored in the Third Battle of Winchester on Sept. 19, 1864.
Winchester native and history buff Jeff Chamberlin stands at a home in the Pioneer Heights subdivision that served as headquarters for Union Gen. Philip Sheridan during the Third Battle of Winchester.

WINCHESTER — An archaeologist must feel a thrill when she or he pulls a piece of history from the ground, something that was important to people of the past and hasn’t been seen for ages.
