C-CAP school supplies

School supplies are needed for children in Winchester and Frederick County, including book bags, crayons, colored pencils, notebooks, dividers, highlighters and other supplies.

Donations of supplies or gift cards are requested by July 24. They should be taken to Rugs Direct at 116 Featherbed Lane in Winchester.

The Congregational-Community Action Project distribution will be held July 27-28. Call 540-667-9507 or 540-662-4318.

Salvation Army volunteers

The Salvation Army needs volunteers to: assist with serving meals during the Summer Feeding Program; unload merchandise from trucks at the thrift store; cook and serve meals at the shelter; organize groceries in the pantry; and perform general maintenance, cleaning, lawn and landscape care, and general office duties at the headquarters at 300 Fort Collier Road.

Duct tape donations

Special Love’s Camp Fantastic, scheduled for Aug. 11-17, needs donations of rolls of duct tape for campers to use in craft classes.

Special Love is a nonprofit organization that supports children with cancer and their families by providing free, year-round camps in Virginia, Maryland and Washington, D.C.

Donations can be mailed to: Special Love, 117 Youth Development Court, Winchester, Va. 22602 or can be dropped off at the Winchester location. To make a monetary donation, visit specialove.org or mail a check to the above address, noting that the contribution is designated for duct tape.

Whitacre scholarships

The Blue Ridge Democratic Women Committee will award two $500 scholarships this year to honor longtime Democrat and business leader Damaris Omps Whitacre.

The scholarship may be used for any education-related expenses for a community college or trade school.

Master Gardener help

The Virginia Cooperative Extension and Frederick County Master Gardeners provide a help desk for people with lawn and garden questions from 9 a.m. to noon each Friday.

Habitat for Humanity

Habitat for Humanity of Winchester-Frederick County is seeking volunteer groups and individuals to help build a home near downtown Winchester.

No skills are necessary. Build days are Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays from 7:45 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Habitat for Humanity owns several vacant properties near downtown Winchester. The organization seeks volunteers with lawn mowers who can mow the sties each week during the summer. Volunteers must be at least 16 and be able to transport the mower.

The American Red Cross needs volunteers willing to respond to disasters.

Magic Lantern Theater

The Magic Lantern Theater seeks volunteers to help set up equipment for outdoor film screenings this summer.

Patsy Cline Historic House volunteers

The Patsy Cline Historic House needs volunteers to help tell the legendary singer’s story at her childhood home in Winchester.

Caregivers vouchers

The Virginia Lifespan Respite Voucher Program provides reimbursement vouchers to home-based caregivers for the cost of temporary, short-term respite care provided to individuals of any age with a disability or special need.

Those eligible are caregivers of children or adults who reside in the same household as the person receiving care. Voucher funding is limited to $400 per family.

Help with reading, writing, math

Literacy Volunteers — Winchester Area provides tutoring and small-group instruction to adults who need basic education in reading, English, math and General Educational Development preparation.

National park volunteers

Cedar Creek and Belle Grove National Historical Park seeks volunteers to assist the park with visitor services and other projects.

Blue Ridge Hospice  thrift shop volunteers

Blue Ridge Hospice needs volunteers for its thrift shops in Winchester, Stephens City, Front Royal, Berryville and Purcellville.

The volunteers will sort donations and hang clothing for display and sale.

Help for veterans

Military veterans living with a hearing or speech loss are automatically eligible for telecommunications equipment through Virginia’s Technology Assistance Program.

Those eligible include veterans with hearing or speech loss and proof of an honorable discharge; veterans with a hearing or speech loss and documentation of a service-related disability rating from the Department of Veterans Affairs; a surviving spouse or child of a veteran who was killed in the line of duty and has a hearing or speech loss; or an active member of the Virginia National Guard who has completed the required initial active-duty service.

Xi Gamma Pi will place 20 pink flamingos in someone’s yard, along with a sign that reads “Congratulations! You’ve been flocked!”
