AARP Driver Safety
AARP will conduct a classroom refresher course for drivers 50 and older from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. July 12 in the Frederick County Public Safety Building at 1080 Coverstone Drive.
Those completing the course will receive a certificate, which should reduce auto insurance costs. No exams are required. The cost is $14; AARP members will receive a $2 discount if they bring membership cards. Participants should also bring a driver’s license.

Salvation Army volunteers
The Salvation Army needs volunteers to: serve meals during the Summer Feeding Program; unload merchandise from trucks at the thrift store; cook and serve meals at the shelter; organize groceries in the pantry; and perform general maintenance and cleaning, lawn and landscape care, and general office duties.

Duct tape donations
Special Love’s Camp Fantastic, scheduled for Aug. 11-7, needs donations of rolls of duct tape for campers to use in craft classes.
Special Love is a nonprofit organization that supports children with cancer and their families by providing free, year-round camps in Virginia, Maryland and Washington, D.C.
Donations can be mailed to: Special Love, 117 Youth Development Court, Winchester, Va. 22602, or can be dropped off at that address.

The Blue Ridge Democratic Women Committee will award two $500 scholarships this year to honor longtime Democrat and business leader Damaris Omps Whitacre.
The scholarship may be used for any education-related expenses for community college or trade school.

Master Gardener help

Habitat for Humanity
Habitat for Humanity of Winchester-Frederick County is seeking volunteers to help build a home near downtown Winchester.
No skills are necessary. The build days are Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays from 7:45 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Habitat for Humanity owns several properties in the downtown area that are vacant while families are being assigned. The organization seeks volunteers with lawn mowers who can mow the sites weekly during the summer. The volunteers must be at least 16 and be able to transport the mower.

Patsy Cline Historic House seeks volunteers to tell the legendary singer’s story at her childhood home in Winchester.
The Virginia Lifespan Respite Voucher Program provides reimbursement vouchers to home-based caregivers for the cost of temporary, short-term respite care provided to individuals of any age with a disability or special need.
Those eligible are caregivers of children or adults who reside in the same household as the person receiving care. Voucher funding is limited to $400 per family.
Help with reading, writing, math
Literacy Volunteers — Winchester Area provides tutoring and small-group instruction to adults who need basic education in reading, English, math and General Educational Development preparation.

Blue Ridge Hospice thrift shop volunteers

The volunteers will sort donations and hang clothing for display and sale.

Faith in Action for Winchester and Frederick and Clarke counties needs volunteers to visit with local residents or to take residents to medical and other types of appointments.
Help for veterans
Military veterans living with a hearing or speech loss are automatically eligible for telecommunications equipment through Virginia’s Technology Assistance Program.
Those eligible include veterans with hearing or speech loss and proof of an honorable discharge; veterans with a hearing or speech loss and documentation of a service-related disability rating from the Department of Veterans Affairs; a surviving spouse or child of a veteran who was killed in the line of duty and has a hearing or speech loss; or an active member of the Virginia National Guard who has completed the required initial active-duty service.

Concern Hotline needs volunteers to answer calls from home or on cell phones for four hours a week.
The Clarke County Animal Shelter needs volunteers to help stray or abandoned dogs and cats find homes.
Frederick County’s recycling initiative “Save-a-Sole” collects shoes, heels, handbags, belts, hats, luggage, backpacks and bags in any condition for recycling.
The items are shipped to West Africa.
Collection drop-off points are at county citizens’ convenience sites (except Gainesboro and Star Tannery), the Regional Landfill and the Frederick County Animal Shelter.
The Kernstown Battlefield Association needs volunteers to help on weekends through October at the site off Valley Avenue in Winchester.
