Dates set for Ripken event in Winchester
WINCHESTER — Nine months from today, teams from across America will be in the city to vie for a national youth baseball championship.
The 2014 Cal Ripken 10-Year-Old World Series is scheduled to be held in Jim Barnett Park on Aug. 9-16.
Teams will arrive on Aug. 7 and begin pool play at Yost Field on Aug. 9. The championship game is set for 1 p.m. on Aug. 16.
Jennifer Jones, Winchester’s parks and recreation director, said the second organizational meeting for the tournament was held on Thursday. Organizers are benefiting from having a structure in place because the city hosted the 10-year-old championship in 2011.
The primary effort at this point, she said, is lining up sponsors.
“We need,” Jones said, “a title sponsor.”
The title sponsorship costs $25,000. In exchange, the business receives a package of benefits that include its logo and name on all souvenirs, four banners to be flown at the park, and tournament and parking passes.
Wells Fargo was the title sponsor in 2011.
Other sponsorship opportunities are available for amounts ranging from $500 to $10,000.
The event website — winchestervaworldseries.com — has been launched. It features information about the upcoming tournament and the 2011 event, which Southeast Lexington, Ky., won by topping host Winchester 5-4 in the championship game.
Jones said a major effort will be made to ensure that souvenir vendors can provide merchandise more quickly than they did in 2011.
“We’re hoping to have T-shirts made on-site,” she said. “From what I understand, the staff was still mailing things in November to people who bought souvenirs.”
