Farmers markets offer fresh, fall products

Alamo Market, Papermill Road and Shawnee Drive in Winchester, is open from 10 a.m to 5 p.m. Sunday through Wednesday, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and is closed Thursday.

The market has apples, tomatoes, a variety of winter squash, as well as meats, eggs, dairy products, mums, hanging baskets, mulch, topsoil and a variety of pumpkins.

Children can mine for fossils, gems, minerals and arrowheads at the mining sluice. Groups welcome.

Apple Tree Market, 2454 Northwestern Pike, is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday to Saturday and 10 a.m.- to 4:30 p.m. Sunday.

The market offers fresh seasonal produce, local apples, winter squash, pumpkins, gourds, cooking pumpkins, Rinker’s cider, local eggs, dairy products, homemade fudge, baked goods, jams and jellies, pickles, salsas, Greenberry’s coffee and local beef and handmade soap and crafts made by local artists. The Barefoot Farmer, Scott Whitacre, is open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday through December on the Loudoun Street Mall in Winchester and offers vegetables, fruits and plants.

Clarke County Farmers Market is open from 8 a.m. to noon Saturdays through this month on the town parking lot off Church Street in Berryville.

Cline’s Farm Market, 920 Hopewell Road, Clear Brook, is open from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday to Friday and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.

Freight Station Farmers Market, 315 W. Boscawen St. in Winchester, is a producers-only market. It is open from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday, Friday and Saturday.

The market is holding a food drive from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday to benefit the Highland Food Pantry in Winchester. All shelf stable foods are welcome including protein sources, such as peanut butter, canned meats, fish, soups, and canned vegetables, like beans, sweet potatoes and tomatoes.

The vendors at the market will also serve free refreshments, and there will be drawings for gift certificates and other prizes.

All participating vendors come from Frederick County and the counties that border it.

Fresh, local fruits and vegetables available at this time include tomatoes, beans, peppers, cabbage, potatoes, sweet potatoes, apples, winter squash, kale, collards, mustard, turnips, beets, leeks, radishes, carrots, and herbs. Other products are grass-fed beef, Alaskan fish, baked goods, cheese, plants, honey, unpasteurized cider, and preserves.
