Farmers markets opening for season

Winchester — Some area farmers markets are open for the season:

Apple Tree Market, 2454 Northwestern Pike, is open from 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Mondays to Saturdays and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sundays.

The market offers flowers, herbs, bedding plants, produce, Trickling Springs dairy products and eggs, local beef, Crabill’s meats, including bacon and sausage, honey, jams and jellies, country ham, homemade fudge, homemade Easter candy, baked goods, maple syrup, Bob’s Red Mill, Oliver Acres Farm Goat Milk Soaps and Beggar’s Dozen gourmet dog treats. Freight Station Farmers Market, 315 W. Boscawen St., Winchester, is open from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays.

Its primary focus is on fresh, whole foods: fruits, vegetables, meats, cheese and fish. Seasonal produce available includes asparagus, salad mix, greens, spinach, green onions, leeks, root vegetables, potatoes, sweet potatoes, apples, and rhubarb.

Beef, chicken, turkey, pork, lamb, rabbit, goat cheese and eggs are for sale at the market. Vegetable and bedding plants, perennials, artisan soap, honey, preserves, unpasteurized apple cider, baked goods, pet treats, personal care items, and gingered fruit beverages can also be found.

Wild caught Alaskan fish, (salmon, halibut, rockfish, cod, and shellfish), sourced directly from commercial Alaskan fishermen, is featured.

NB Market, 5057 Northwestern Pike, Gore, is open year-round from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Mondays to Fridays, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturdays, and 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sundays.

The market features jellies, preserves, fruit butters, fruit salsas, Vidalia Onion Salad Dressing, pickles, pickled vegetables, barbecue sauce, apple cider and apple-cherry cider, all from the family owned Shawnee Springs production facility. In addition, the store has fresh-baked pies, specialty wines, and gifts, such as Lazy One Fashion Ware, Virginia-made wind chimes by QMT, and selection of garden and other flags for all seasons, Red Nek glassware and more.
