Gathering wool for the world
Jake Grove (left), superintendent of Middleburg Agricultural Research and Extension Center, and Corey Childs, with the Virginia Cooperative Extension, unload a bag of wool brought in by a local wool producer at the Clarke County Ruritan Fairgrounds on Tuesday. Once a year, the Virginia Cooperative Extension and the Northern Virginia Area Wool Producers collect wool at the fairgrounds from the larger, commercial sheep farmers in the quad-state area — Virginia, Maryland, West Virginia and Pennsylvania. The wool is then shipped to Ohio where it is sorted, graded, sold and shipped all over the world.
