WINCHESTER — American Legion Post 21 will host a hiring fair for veterans from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. April 15 at 1730 Berryville Ave.

Military veterans, active duty military members, National Guard and reserve members and military spouses are invited to attend the free event.

Local employers who want to hire personnel also are invited.

Recent reports on veterans’ employment from the Bureau of Labor Statistics show an overall decline in the unemployment rate for veterans, from 8.3 percent in 2011 to 7 percent in 2012.

But Seth D. Harris, acting secretary of labor, said programs such as the hiring fair are needed.

“We’re moving in the right direction,” Harris said. “But much more needs to be done to ensure that no veteran struggles to find work after serving honorably to keep us safe and secure.”

Job seekers can pre-register for the local fair online, or they can simply drop by the fair on the day of the event. Those who do not pre-register should bring proof of military service with them.

Hiring Our Heroes also has launched an online partnership with to complement the hiring fairs across the country. Veterans can get interview tips as well as help writing resumes that translate military skills, experience and training into related civilian careers. They also can find lists of job opportunities with military-friendly employers.

The local hiring fair is one of more than 75 scheduled across the country.
