LFCC medical billing, coding program ranked best

middletown — Lord Fairfax Community College is the best Medical Billing and Coding school for 2013, according to rankings from Frugaldad.com, a website that focuses on higher education and how to pay for it.

“Over 90 percent of the students who pursue LFCC’s program pass the Certified Professional Coding exam,” said Brenda Byard, LFCC’s dean of business and technologies. “The national average is 50 percent.”

People in the medical billing and coding profession manage information and data provided by health-care providers.

LFCC faculty have hands-on experience in the field have helped students pursue careers ranging from medical billing specialist to medical insurance specialist.

The starting salary for medical coders is $33,370, according to eHow.com.

Since 2004, 135 students have earned a certificate in Medical Billing and Coding at LFCC.

The process to complete certification takes a year and includes a variety of courses, including medical coding, reimbursement, and medical office bookkeeping and insurance.
