Lions Bland Music Contest set in area

Winchester — The Lions Club James Bland Music Contest is open to area students — public, private or home-school — elementary through grade 12.

The contest is named for James Allen Bland, a song writer of 700 songs, including the Virginia state song, “Carry Me Back to Old Virginny.”

Virginia Lions clubs honor Bland with a music scholarship competition to encourage the youth of Virginia to develop musical talent.

The Winchester Host Lions Club contest will be held at 4:30 p.m. Feb. 19 in the sanctuary of Bethel Lutheran Church, 2077 North Frederick Pike, Winchester.

Contestants must reside within the jurisdiction of the Winchester Host Lions Club and attend school.

The Shawnee Lions Club competition will be held Feb. 22. Contact Jim Christiansen at 540-667-3873.

A contestant must perform a single composition from memory, stay within an eight-minute time limit, provide at least one original copy of the composition for the judges, provide accompanist if required, and provide any instrument other than piano.

Each student must obtain permission of his or her music teacher who must sign the application, indicating approval and assistance to the student in preparing for the contest.

Prizes for the senior division (grades 9 to 12) – instrumental, first place, $50; second place, $25; vocal, first place, $50; second place, $25. Junior division (grades 8 and below) — instrumental, first place, $25; second place, $15; vocal, first place, $25; second place, $15.

First-place instrumental and vocal winners in the senior division are eligible to compete in the Bland Zone Contest March 22. A district competition will be held in April.
