WINCHESTER — Navy Federal Credit Union now employs more than 1,000 people, making it the largest private-sector employer in Frederick County.

And the financial institution plans to hire almost 100 more people soon to work at its contact center in Frederick County, according to Michele Townes, who is in corporate communications with Navy Federal. A job fair will be held from 1 to 6 p.m. Thursday at Lord Fairfax Community College’s Corron Community Development Center in Middletown.

Navy Federal does not provide salary information because numerous factors can affect starting pay.

At this time last year, Navy Federal had 680 employees in one building at 144 Security Drive, east of Winchester off Millwood Pike.

In August, when it opened a second building across the parking lot, it already had 100 people working there.

“By the time we’re done, we believe that we’re going to have over 1,400 people working in the facility,” credit union President and CEO Cutler Dawson said at the time.

According to Townes, the addition of the new facility will create 450 jobs over the next five years.

“The positions are mostly member service representatives, but over the five-year period, it will be member service representatives, supervisors, trainers and quality-assurance individuals,” Townes said Tuesday.

Contact center workers take calls from credit union members in support of financial transactions, credit cards and mortgages. The facility operates 365 days a year, 24 hours a day.

Navy Federal, which is 81 years old, has more than 4.3 million members worldwide.

When the local contact center opened in 2006, it had 60 employees, according to a news release from the Winchester-Frederick County Economic Development Commission. The 1,000-employee mark was reached last month.

“It’s a monumental achievement to have someone that reaches that 1,000-employee threshhold,” EDC Executive Director Patrick Barker said Tuesday. “We’re ecstatic that Navy Federal Credit Union has risen to that level locally.”

The local operation represents about 10 percent of Navy Federal’s total workforce of about 11,000 worldwide.

Barker said it’s one of the five largest overall employers in the Northern Shenandoah Valley.

Frederick County Public Schools had more than 1,000 employees as of the end of 2013, as did Valley Health and Walmart, he said.

Area employers with 500 to 999 employees include Lord Fairfax Community College and the Federal Emergency Management Agency, he said.
