Star staff report

Winchester — The Bistro Concert at Westminster-Canterbury will showcase jazz by Oui-3 at 7:30 p.m. Friday.

This is an outstanding local jazz trio, according to Robert and Cari Sherwood, the organizers of the Bistro concerts.

The trio offers familiar jazz from the era of the 1960s and 1970s along with earlier jazz standards and a splash of bossa nova.

The group features Jonathan Rose on guitar, David Gerwig on saxophone and Ralph Gordon on bass.

This combination of instruments lines out the melodies with uncluttered clarity. The bass becomes a central sound, rather than background, and Gordon is thought to be one of the best in the country. The total effect is musically comfortable and pleasing, according to the Sherwoods.

Admission is $10 at the door. The monthly Bistro Concerts at the Westminster-Canterbury retirement community aim to offer the larger community a diversity of music. It is open to the public. Call 540 665-0156.

On Dec. 14, the pianist Thomas Pandolfi will perform classics from the world’s great piano literature of the past 200 years.
