Our View: Congratulations, Erick!
Unless you’re a five-star recruit bound for the NBA — and sometimes not even then — Division I college basketball can be a crapshoot. There are no guarantees of playing time, much less stardom. Often, it comes down to timing and opportunity.
In the case of Winchester’s own Erick Green, it came down to both. A bit player as a freshman at Virginia Tech, the former Millbrook standout saw a depleted Hokie backcourt as his chance to make an impact as a sophomore. He’s never looked back.
On Thursday night, Erick, now a senior point guard, scored his 1,000th point in Hokie maroon during a 95-80 thrashing of VMI. He is now the unquestioned leader, the star, on a young Tech quintet.
In many ways though, he’s the same Erick we came to know when he was leading Millbrook to the 2008 AA state title. Taking stock of his benchmark achievement, he said, “It’s a great accomplishment, but I’m just glad we got the win.”
Spoken like a true point guard. Congratulations, Erick — and may there be many more buckets to come.
