Our View: Done! Recount over
The necessary recount has been completed, and a victor declared in the closest statewide race in Virginia history. Democrat Mark Herring of Leesburg will be our next attorney general. We salute him on his victory; may he administer the office wisely and equitably.
To echo House Speaker Bill Howell, we had hoped for “different results.” We endorsed Mark Obenshain; we believe the Republican from Harrisonburg would have made an excellent attorney general; we still think a bright political future awaits him. His gracious concession Wednesday buttresses this feeling that better days lie ahead.
So let us move on, firm in the knowledge that the system works, secure in the primacy in the Virginia Way, and guarded in the hope that the state’s new leadership — Gov.-elect Terry McAuliffe, Lt. Gov.-elect Ralph Northam, and Attorney General-elect Herring — will prove capable stewards of a commonwealth renowned for its exemplary governance.
