Our View: No happier words
It was the poet Whittier, we believe, who anguished over “sad words” — i.e., “For all sad words of tongue and pen, the saddest are these, ‘It might have been’.”
Well, even as our weather ping-pongs around from sublime to sodden, we have an antidote — happier words, geared specifically to this time of year when we’ve all grown weary of winter’s vexing ways.
“Might have been”? No, “it will be.” The ancient pastime’s marching orders have been posted: “Pitchers and catchers report today.”
Yes, the boys of summer are drifting back to Florida and Arizona. Baseball beckons, as does the promise of spring. Life is good — or, at least, getting better.
Happy words, to be sure.
