Our View: No-holds-barred Juan
Juan Williams is a true rara avis — a left-of-center commentator whose stock-in-trade is being reasonable. While we don’t always agree with his conclusions, we believe he arrives at them thoughtfully rather than through a prism of reflexive ideology.
To be sure, this approach has landed Mr. Williams in hot water . . . with folks on his side of the philosophical spectrum. Take, for instance, his forced departure from National Public Radio for nothing more than post-9/11 honesty. Large groups of identifiable Muslims make him uncomfortable, particularly in airports, he said.
This independent streak, and willingness to speak his mind, may serve to explain not only Mr. Williams’ longtime association with Fox News, but also this declaration, made this past weekend to Ginni Thomas of The Daily Caller.
“I always thought it was the Archie Bunkers of the world, the right-wingers of the world, who were more resistant and more closed-minded about hearing the other side,” he told the wife of Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas.
“In fact, what I have learned is, in a very painful way — and I can open this shirt and show you the scars and the knife wounds — is that it is big media institutions who are identifiably more liberal to left-leaning who will shut you down, stab you and kill you, fire you, if they perceive that you are not telling the story in the way that they want it told.”
Any wonder the video of this interview has gone viral?
