One of these princesses would be crowned the 1963 Queen of the Greens as part of the Burning of the Greens celebration held on Jan. 2, 1963, by the Winchester Teen-Age Club. TAC members collected Christmas trees and greens for a bonfire at the park followed by a dance in the Winchester War Memorial building, where the queen was crowned. The princesses are (from left, bottom row): Sandy Russell, Ann Holsinger and Julie Glass; second row, Diane Carper and Carol Mills; top row, Pat Petrie, Sue Owings and Karen Shull. The photo was provided by Diane Carper of Vienna, formerly of Winchester. The photo appeared in The Star on Dec. 11, 1962. Want to know who was crowned the queen? Read Out of the Past in January.
