Region has ties to rare stamp on block

The Winchester Star

This envelope bears a stamp that is an Alexandria Postmaster’s Provisional, one of six known to exist. It was mailed to the Parkins family, which operated flour mills on Abram’s Creek in Frederick County, south of Winchester.

WINCHESTER — When William Stabler mailed a letter on Aug. 25, 1846, from Alexandria to Parkins’ Mills near Winchester, he couldn’t have known it would become a piece of U.S. postal history.
