WINCHESTER — A special session in honor of former Virginia Supreme Court Justice Henry H. Whiting will be held in the circuit courts of Winchester and Frederick County at 4:30 p.m. Friday at the Joint Judicial Center.

The 88-year-old died Sept. 17 in Frederick County.

Whiting was a member of the Winchester-Frederick County Bar Association and worked for 31 years in private practice before becoming a judge in 1980 in Virginia’s 26th Judicial Circuit.

In 1987, he was elected by the General Assembly to serve on the Supreme Court of Virginia — a post from which he semi-retired in 1995. He continued to serve the court in a senior justice capacity until 2002.

According to his obituary, Whiting was the first person from the Winchester-Frederick County area to be appointed to the state Supreme Court in more than 100 years.

A memorial service for Whiting will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at First Presbyterian Church at 116 S. Loudoun St.

The Joint Judicial Center is at 5 N. Kent St. in Winchester.
