A salad is more beautiful when it contains a mixture of colors and textures. Try different varieties of lettuce to maximize the interest. Here, Simpson Elite and New Wild Fire looseleaf and Freckles Oakleaf lettuces are grown together in a knot.
Swiss chard is a beautiful plant with stems that may be pink, orange, yellow, white or green. It is tasty when picked small and mixed in salad greens.
Purple Vienna is a variety of kohlrabi with a purple skin and clear white flesh. It is a beautiful plant that tastes good and brings color to the vegetable garden.

WINCHESTER — It’s almost spring, thank goodness!

I welcome it each year with great joy and gladness. And the first spring garden task I do is get my vegetable garden planted.
