Variety of apples available at area farmers markets

Winchester — These local farmers markets are open for the season:

Apple Tree Market, 2454 Northwestern Pike (U.S. 50), is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday to Saturday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday until Dec. 23. Hours will change on Saturday — Monday to Saturday 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Sunday 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The market offers cooking pumpkins, fall decorations, apples, Trickling Springs dairy products, local eggs, local beef, sausage, country ham, honey, homemade fudge, baked goods, seasonal candies, jams and jellies, pickles and relishes, Greenberry’s coffee and Oliver’s Acres Family Farm goat milk soaps and body butters. Apple gift boxes may be prepared for shipping.

Cline’s Farm Market, 920 Hopewell Road, Clear Brook, is open from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday to Friday and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. Golden and Red Delicious, Fuji, Rome, Granny Smith and York apples are available.

Freight Station Farmers Market, 315 W. Boscawen St., Winchester, is a producer-only market. The hours are 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays.

From 8 a.m. to 1 p.m, Saturday, the market will hold a food drive to benefit the Highland Food Pantry at the Highland Presbyterian Church in Winchester. All food and monetary donations are welcome. The pantry needs shelf-stable proteins, including peanut butter, canned fish and canned meats.

Free kettle corn and hot mulled cider will be also served at the market on Saturday.

Tomatoes, apples, beans, summer and winter squash, potatoes, lima beans, greens, turnips, leeks, peppers, cut flowers and other local produce are available. All fruits and vegetables sold at the market must come from within a 50-mile radius of Winchester.

Plants, unpasteurized apple cider, honey, goat cheese, eggs, mushrooms, gluten-free baked goods, beef, pork and lamb, and wild caught Alaskan fish are offered weekly.

Specialty items, including soaps, flavored beverages and barbecue can be found on a rotating schedule. Mayfair Farm, Masters Touch, Stoney Lane Farm, Merrymoon Farm, Shepherds Whey Creamery, LizSoaps, Nutritious Mom, Dr. B’s Microbrewed Tea, Ginger Delight and Top Flight Barbeque are participating market vendors.

Linda’s Mercantile, 2502 North Frederick Pike (U.S. 522), is a partnership of Fruit Hill Orchard and David and Linda Lay.

Marker-Miller Orchards Farm Market & Bakery, 3035 Cedar Creek Grade, Winchester, is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays to Fridays, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays and from noon to 5 p.m. Sundays.

Fourteen varieties of apples are available. The bakery offers cakes, pies, cookies, cinnamon/rum buns, peach turnovers, apple turnovers and apple- cider doughnuts. The market also sells fresh fudge, hand-dipped ice cream and fresh apple-cider slushes.

Other items include cider, milk, fresh eggs, fruit wines, jams, jellies, salad dressings, local honey, a variety of syrups and no-sugar-added jarred goods.
