Star staff report

Winchester — Guided Civil War walking tours are offered through October in Winchester and in the Frederick County communities of Kernstown, Stephens City and Middletown.

The tours, a project of the Winchester-Frederick County Civil War Sesquicentennial Committee, are coordinated by the Winchester-Frederick County Convention and Visitors Bureau.

New this year is the addition of two Old Town Winchester holiday tours — Memorial Day and Labor Day. The holiday tours begin at 10 a.m. and cost $5 per person. For more information, or to make reservations, call 540-542-1326.

“The guided Civil War walking tours focus on struggles endured by community residents,” said Sally Coates, executive director of the Winchester-Frederick County Convention and Visitors Bureau. “Stories from letters, diary entries and drawings are included in the tours. With every step, visitors and residents alike will gain a better understanding of what it was like to live in Winchester and Frederick County during this very tumultuous time.”

Most of the tours are designed to last about one hour. Some of the tours are free, and some are $5 per person with the fee payable to the guide.

The guides are knowledgeable, experienced in leading tours, and each of them has a passion for preservation, she said.
