WINCHESTER — A local woman was charged Wednesday after allegedly killing her dog late last month.

Juana Ortega Ortega , 21, of the 800 block of Berryville Avenue, was given a summons for one count of animal cruelty.

According to Lauren Cummings, Winchester Police Department spokeswoman, officers were called July 26 to Ortega Ortega’s residence for a report of animal cruelty.

The caller advised that she could see a dog hanging from its kennel.

Police arrived and allegedly found Ortega Ortega’s pit bull chained to the inside of its kennel, according to Cummings.

The dog was not able to reach the ground and died.

Cummings did not know how old the pet was, or its name. It is also unclear why Ortega Ortega allegedly hung the dog.

Her information has not yet been updated in the court system, so it is unknown when she is expected to appear in court.
