WINCHESTER — A trial date has been set for a former member of the Bass-Hoover Elementary School Parent Teacher Organization who was indicted for taking money from the group.
Catherine Martin, 40, of Stephens City — a former treasurer with the PTO according to Frederick County Sheriff’s Office Capt. Allen Sibert — was prosecuted Oct. 4 on two counts of embezzlement.
Martin, who appeared Thursday in Frederick County Circuit Court with attorney Timothy Mayfield, is scheduled to go to trial on the charges at 9 a.m. March 13.
Officers learned of the alleged embezzlement on May 15 after receiving a call from the PTO president. Sibert has not disclosed the amount, but earlier called it a “substantial sum of money that was missing.”
Officials with Frederick County Public Schools said PTOs and other similar groups are responsible for their own financial activities and record keeping.
Martin allegedly embezzled money from August 2011 to March 2012.
