Area briefs: SU men win tourney title

WINCHESTER — The Shenandoah University men’s basketball team earned its first season-opening tournament championship in nine years Saturday night with a 76-71 BB&T Tip-Off championship game victory over Hood College.

Shenandoah (2-0), which downed former USA South-rival Methodist on Friday, earned its first BB&T title since winning the 2004 crown with a win over Lincoln University.

Avery Green led the Hornets to the title with a pair of 29-point performances.

In addition to Green’s 29 points, Jared Carithers added 20.


Captains 89, Hornets 58

ASHLAND —No. 3 Christopher Newport University used a hot-shooting performance from the field in the second half to key a victory over Shenandoah University in the second round of the Randolph-Macon Tip-Off Saturday afternoon.

CNU (1-1) shot 66 percent from the field in the second half to turn a 38-30 halftime advantage into the 31-point win.

SU sophomore Imani Heggins, who led all scorers with 24 points, was named to the All-Tournament team for SU (0-2). Heggins also had a game-high seven rebounds.


SU’s Taylor qualifies for NCAA meet

NEWPORT NEWS — Senior Ryan Taylor became just the second cross country in men’s cross country history to qualify for the NCAA National Championship with a sixth place finish Saturday afternoon at the NCAA South/Southeast Regionals hosted by Christopher Newport University.

Taylor crossed the finish line with a time of 25 minutes, 10.78 seconds.

Taylor advances to next week’s national championships at Hanover College in Hanover, Ind.
