Area briefs: SVCA volleyball sweeps Fresta Valley

STEPHENS CITY — Shenandoah Valley Christian Academy bounced back from only its second loss of the season with a 3-0 (25-9, 25-23, 25-21) sweep of visiting Fresta Valley Thursday evening.

SVCA (15-2) received 13 kills and three aces from sophomore Carol Bartholomew and a team-high 19 assists from setter Kayla Freemire.

Sophomore Krista Freemire added 11 kills and senior Sarah McGann totaled five kills in the win for the Patriots.

FIELD HOCKEY

Hornets 3, Seahawks 2

ST. MARY’S CITY, Md. — Shenandoah University completed its non-conference field hockey slate Thursday afternoon with a victory at St. Mary’s of Maryland.

The Hornets (8-6) also clinched at least a .500 regular season record with the win over the Seahawks (6-5).

St. Mary’s had the opening goal of the game, scoring just 52 seconds in, before SU answered with three goals in a span of 6:11.

Senior Amber VanHorn had the first two tallies, finishing off a pair of feeds from Alexandra Darrow on penalty corners.

At 19:53, just 32 seconds after VanHorn had given Shenandoah a 2-1 lead, Darrow scored unassisted with what proved to be the game-winner.

SU held that two-goal advantage until the ’Hawks closed the book on the day’s scoring with 17 seconds remaining.

St. Mary’s outshot the Hornets 18-7 and held a 15-4 advantage in penalty corners.

Sarah Clare had four saves for Shenandoah.
