Area briefs: Warrior girls beat Colonels

WINCHESTER — Sherando pulled away in the second half to rally for a 54-48 Northwestern District girls’ basketball victory over James Wood Friday night.
Lauren Reed and Dani Rizzari scored 15 points apiece to help the Warriors (4-8, 1-0 Northwestern) snap a six-game losing streak. Heidi Brown and Jessica Hakel added seven points apiece for Sherando.
James Wood (6-4, 0-1) led 29-28 at the half.
Morgan Duncan led three James Wood players in double figures with 13. Brooke Nesselrodt added 11, and Keiana Brooks chipped in with 10.
Eagles 65, Cougars 16
BERRYVILLE — Clarke County blanked Manassas Park 26-0 in the opening quarter en route to a lopsided Bull Run District girls’ basketball victory Friday night.
Sophomore Anna Blue Catlett scored a game-high 19 points and had six rebounds and four steals, and sophomore Sydney Chrane added 18 points, six rebounds and three steals.
Rachel Sefton and Becky Smith added seven apiece for the Eagles (10-2, 4-1 Bull Run).

LFCC changing mascot name to Lions
MIDDLETOWN — Lord Fairfax Community College (LFCC) has selected a new mascot for its athletics teams. Students, faculty and staff voted for teams to be known as “LFCC Lions” and selected a new logo to represent the teams. The voting was conducted online and the winning entry received 54 percent of the votes. The logo was designed by Aaron Riddle, LFCC’s Graphic Design and Digital Media Specialist.
LFCC fields interscholastic teams in men’s and women’s soccer, men’s and women’s rugby, and men’s and women’s basketball. Previously, teams were referred to as the “LFCC Cannons.”
