The vehicle caught fire in ther middle of the intersection of Valley Avenue and Weems Lane in Winchester around 1 this afternoon.
Officials are still investigating what caused the fire — which occurred at the intersection of Valley Avenue and Weems Lane around 1 p.m. — according to Winchester Fire and Rescue Battalion Chief Matt DeHaven.
The fire started in the engine and passenger compartments of a pickup truck, but became a fuel-fed blaze because the fuel tank ruptured, DeHaven said.
The driver was turning south on Valley Avenue from Weems Lane when he noticed slight hesitation and a backfire from his truck.
DeHaven said the driver and a passenger got out of the truck to try and push it to the side of the road when they noticed the fire.
Winchester Fire and Rescue Crews fromShawnee and South End responded to the blaze, in addition to DeHaven.
He said traffic was congested in the area and had to be re-routed for about an hour and a half.
DeHaven didn’t have an exact estimate for how much damage was caused to the truck, but said it was considered a total loss.
