BERRYVILLE — The Clarke County Sheriff’s Office is investigating what could be one of the largest marijuana plant seizures in the locality in recent years.
According to Sgt. Travis Sumption, deputies seized 156 marijuana plants Nov. 16 from the 500 block of Westwood Road — located just outside the Berryville town limits. The plants have an estimated street value of more than $500,000.
The matured plants were found in a dilapidated barn and were already cut and hung up to dry.
Sumption said that information received by the Sheriff’s Office led them to the plants, but he did not reveal the source of the information.
No arrests have been made but the investigation is ongoing, he said.
Sumption added that the property owner, who is not being identified, is cooperating with law enforcement.
It’s unknown if the plants were grown on the property on which they were found, but Sumption said it’s possible that the marijuana was going to be distributed. He said the marijuana plant seizure is the largest one he knows of in Clarke County in his seven years working with drugs on the police force.
Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact Sumption at 540-955-5182 or Crime Solvers at 540-665-8477.
