Summer Lecture Series

The Godfrey Miller Historic Home and Fellowship Center, 28 S. Loudoun St., will continue its 2013 Summer Lecture Series featuring Dr. Robert Meadows with a presentation at 7 p.m. today on “God in the Union and Confederate Armies.” Admission is $10.

Outdoor movie

Winchester Parks and Recreation will continue its summer outdoor movie series with “Brave” at dusk today on the lawn of the Old Court House Civil War Museum. Bring your own chairs and blankets.

Friday

Bluemont concert

The Bluemont Concert Series will present a performance by Circa Blue at 7:30 p.m. Friday on the lawn of the Old Court House Civil War Museum on the Loudoun Street Mall.

Admission is $5 per person, $4 for Bluemont Friends and seniors, and $2 for children under 12.

In case of bad weather, the concert will be moved indoors to First Presbyterian Church, 116 S. Loudoun St., Winchester.

Music in the park

Berryville Main Street presents Music in the Park featuring “Mike Confrey and Friends — Rock and Roll Blues” from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Friday at Rose Hill Park, Berryville. The event is free and open to the public.

Steam Show

The 46th annual Steam Show will be held from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday, 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. Saturday, and 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday at the Clarke County Ruritan Fairgrounds in Berryville. Admission is $5 per person and free for children younger than 12.

The Jazz Lounge

The Barns of Rose Hill, 95 Chalmers Court, Berryville, will have the Jazz Lounge featuring Bob Larson Jazz Trio at 8 p.m. Friday. Tickets are $15 in advance and $20 at the door.

Yard, bake sale

Fairview Lutheran Church, west of Gore on Fairview Road, will have an indoor yard and bake sale at 8 a.m. Friday and Saturday.

Film showing

The Magic Lantern Theater and the Museum of the Shenandoah Valley will offer an outdoor screening of the short Italian opera, “Pagliacci” at 8:30 p.m. Friday at the museum, 901 Amherst St., Winchester.

This film version stars Placido Domingo in performance at the Kennedy Center Opera House.

Jazz by Combo

Jazz by Combo will play at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Westminster-Canterbury.

Verne Collins, Doug Harrison, Steve Baird and Fred Williams make up the group, which plays primarily supper club swing jazz.

Miller/Orndorff/Nesmith reunion

The descendants of Phillip Setzer Orndorff and Mary Jane Tevault, Jacob Sylvanius Miller and Mary Catherine Reynolds, and Bethuel Middleton Nesmith and Alice Dortha Franks will hold a reunion at noon Saturday at the Capon Ruritan Building, River Road, Yellow Spring, W.Va. There will be genealogy information, history, family photos, prizes, and a family talent showcase.

Howard’s Chapel United Methodist Church, 3740 Green Spring Road, will have a yard party at 4 p.m. and an auction at 6 p.m. Saturday.

Battle commemoration

The Kernstown Battlefield Association will commemorate the 149th anniversary of the Second Battle of Kernstown from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday at 610 Battle Park Drive, Winchester.

The event includes a battlefield walking tour at 10 a.m. Saturday and a Civil War church service at 10 a.m. Sunday followed by a 1 p.m. memorial service dedicated to Union Col. James Mulligan of the Irish Brigade.

Branner reunion

The descendants of George and Christine Beahm Branner will hold their annual reunion and picnic at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Relief United Methodist Church picnic shelter on Middle Road. Bring an item for the auction.

W.R. Spiker reunion

The W.R. Spiker Family reunion will be held at noon Saturday at the Trinity Lutheran Church, 1643 Pitzer Chapel Road, Berkeley County, Arden, W.Va. Bring a covered dish/dessert to share, photos and family mementos, and an unwrapped item for the silent auction. Meats, beverages, and tableware will be furnished. There will be a short business meeting at the end of the reunion.

The business/genealogy meeting will be held at the General Adam Stephen House, 313 E. John St., Martinsburg, W.Va. from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Friday.

CCHS 1979 and  1989 reunion

The Clarke County High School classes of 1979 and 1989 will hold a joint reunion from 4 to 11 p.m. Saturday at the VFW in Berryville.

There will be a photo booth, DJ and the band Blackmail will perform from 9 to 11p.m.

The United Way Rubbermaid Commercial Product Sale will be held from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday on the Belk parking lot at Apple Blossom Mall in Winchester to benefit Concern Hotline.

Chicken, roast pork dinner

A barbecue chicken and roast pork dinner will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Saturday at Little Mountain United Methodist Church off Cedar Grove Road in Frederick County.

Douglass Family day

Douglass Family Day pool party will be held from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Saturday at Winchester Parks and Recreation outdoor pool. It is free for kids 17 and under and $2 for 18 and up (swimmers and spectators). Pizza and drinks will be sold.

Youth flag football and teen basketball sign-up will be held.

Frederick County Fair

The Frederick County Fair opens Monday and runs through Aug. 3 at the Frederick County Fairgrounds. Admission is $6 for adults, $3 for ages 6 to 11, and free for 5 and under. Monday is “Seniors Citizen’s Night” with $3 entry for ages 55 and older.

Food matters

Food Matters: A Conversation with Two Local Farmers will be held at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday in the Handley Library auditorium.

Two local farmers will show the audience how to enjoy a barcode free meal — Beth Nowak, owner of Mayfair Farm, Bunker Hill, W.Va., and manager of the Freight Station Farmers Market, Winchester, and Forrest Pritchard, owner of Smith Meadows Farm, Clarke County, and author of “Gaining Ground, A Story of Farmers’ Markets, Local Food and Saving the Family Farm.”

This program is sponsored by The Friends of Handley Regional Library. A book signing will follow the program, which is free and open to the public.
