WINCHESTER — An afternoon fire caused major damage at a Frederick County home Saturday, leaving the house uninhabitable.
The fire at 135 Campfield Lane, off Merrimans Lane just west of Winchester, was reported at 1:42 p.m., dispatch records indicate.
The first units to arrive at the scene reported flames showing through the roof of the attached garage, Frederick County Assistant Fire Marshal Mark Showers said Saturday evening, and they began battling the blaze. It extended into the attic, but the firefighters thwarted its spread.
“Their initial knockdown of the fire,” he said, “they made an aggressive attack and saved the majority of the house.
“I can’t talk highly enough of the aggressive attack they made. They saved a significant amount of [the family’s] personal property.”
Showers did not know at the time which fire companies were first on the scene.
No one was home at the time the fire started, he said, but one of the owners and a guest arrived as firefighters battled the blaze. A couple and two college-age children live in the home, but he would not provide their names.
The couple’s insurance company was making arrangements for their shelter, Showers said.
Frederick County property tax records indicate that the home is owned by Charles and Julie Seipp.
Showers said he determined that the fire started in the garage, but the cause would remain unknown due to the amount of damage in that area. The blaze is considered accidental.
He also reported smoke and water damage to the first floor and basement of the home. A damage estimate probably won’t be made until today.
Tax records indicate the assessed value of the house is $262,760.
Fire and/or rescue units from the Round Hill, Gainesboro, Stephens City, Middletown, Clear Brook, Millwood Station, Star Tannery, South End, Shawnee, Rouss and Boyce fire and rescue companies responded to the scene. No one was hurt during the suppression efforts.
