Boyce — A woman was hurt early Saturday morning when she jumped from a second-story window to escape a house fire.

According to Boyce Volunteer Fire and Rescue Company Chief Bryan Conrad, the blaze at 4 Whiting Ave. in Boyce started at the top of the stairs, blocking her escape route.

The woman was taken to Winchester Medical Center and released a few hours later, Conrad said. Her identity wasn’t released.

“She definitely sustained injuries to her legs from jumping out of the windows, but I don’t know what they were,” he said.

The woman was the only person at home when the fire broke out, Conrad said. The blaze was reported at 2:48 a.m.

Though the house has considerable smoke damage from the fire, the flames were contained to the top three or four steps on the staircase, Conrad said.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Enders, Blue Ridge and two Frederick County fire companies responded to the call, in addition to a Mount Weather ambulance.

The last unit cleared the scene at 6:46 a.m.
