WINCHESTER — The Frederick County School Board is seeking applicants to temporarily fill the seat of member Jim Harmon, who died last week.

Harmon, 58, died of cancer Feb. 4. He had represented the Stonewall District since January 2007.

The chosen applicant will attend his or her first board meeting April 3 and hold the seat until Dec. 31.

The selected individual can then choose to run in a School Board election Nov. 5, during which a candidate will be elected to fill the seat from Jan. 1, 2014, to Dec. 31, 2017.

Individuals interested in being considered must meet the requirements for School Board membership as stated in state law, including that they be a registered voter and a resident of the Stonewall District.

A person cannot be an employee of the School Board and cannot hold “an incompatible dual office,” according to a press release issued Monday.

Applicants must submit a letter of interest and resume to Frederick County School Board clerk Steve Edwards no later than noon Feb. 22.

The names of all applicants will be announced during a public hearing at 7 p.m. March 5 in the division’s administration building at 1415 Amherst St.

At the hearing, citizens can speak about their choice of candidate or the qualifications of prospective applicants.

The board will interview applicants between March 5 and19 and announce its choice at the March 19 board meeting.

The appointment schedule could vary, depending on unforeseen delays.
