WINCHESTER — A new health care facility is set to arrive in the area soon.

MedExpress, which operates urgent care centers in several states, is planning to open a facility at Gateway Plaza northeast of the city in March.

“We’re excited to become a part of the community,” said Eamon Given, Virginia area manager for business operations.

The local MedExpress Urgent Care center — which is still under construction on the northern end of the shopping center off Berryville Pike — will have hours from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. seven days a week and always have a physician on duty, Given said.

With nurses, X-ray technicians and office staff, the care center will likely employ 14 to 17 people, he said.

An urgent care center is widely considered a better option than the emergency department for those who need immediate care for a non-life-threatening injury but cannot get an appointment with a doctor.

MedExpress, headquartered in Morgantown, W.Va., operates multiple full-service, walk-in urgent care facilities in Virginia, West Virginia, Florida, Maryland and Pennsylvania.

MedExpress accepts 28 insurance providers, including Optima Health, Medicaid, Medicare and Humana.
