WINCHESTER — No one was injured when a Shenandoah University dormitory was evacuated for about an hour overnight Wednesday for a small fire.

Winchester Fire and Rescue Chief Scott Cullers said the incident was confined to a small area near a bulletin board on the third floor of the Shenandoah Residence Inn — located at 800 Millwood Pike, near Bob Evans.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Crews arrived at the scene just before 1 a.m. Thursday after the dorm’s automatic alarms were set off. Cullers said firefighters went to the third floor, where they encountered “smoke conditions” in the hallway and met with a residence assistant (RA).

The RA told crews that there had been a small fire in the hallway, and that it was put out with a fire extinguisher.

Winchester units ventilated the building and then turned it back over to the university.

Cullers estimated that there was about $100 worth of damage.

All Winchester Fire and Rescue companies, in addition to Millwood from Frederick County, responded.
