Here's a look at what's happening at noon on Friday.
SCHOOL UPDATE: Winchester Public Schools will dismiss early today, Friday, January 25th. Elementary schools will dismiss at 12:30 p.m. Middle and high schools will dismiss at 1:15 p.m.
WEATHER: It is currently 20 degrees with scattered clouds at noon in Winchester. Light snow is on the way this afternoon with a high of 27 and a wind chill as low as 14. Snow should end by 8 with about an inch possible. Low tonight of 21.
Our deep freeze will begin to thaw this weekend as tempeatures may reach above the freezing point Saturday and Sunday for the first time in a week. Then it warms up with highs in the low 40s on Monday and mid- to upper 50s on Tuesday.
STOCKS: Stocks rose on Wall Street in midday trading Friday after Procter & Gamble and Starbucks posted strong earnings reports.
The Dow Jones industrial average rose 30 points to 13,855 as of noon Friday. The Standard & Poor's 500 advanced three points to 1,498. The Nasdaq gained eight points to 3,138.
Procter & Gamble, world's largest consumer products maker, gained $2.61 to $73.02 after reporting that its quarterly income more than doubled. P&G also raised its profit forecast for its full fiscal year. Starbucks rose $1.95 to $56.54 after reporting a 13 percent increase in profits.

HEADLINES: Flu Cases May Be Leveling Off (AP): New government figures show that flu cases seem to be leveling off nationwide. Flu activity is declining in most regions although still rising in the West. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says hospitalizations and deaths spiked again last week, especially among the elderly.
The CDC says quick treatment with antiviral medicines is important, in particular for the very young or old. The season's first flu case resistant to treatment with Tamiflu was reported Friday.
Eight more children have died from the flu, bringing this season's total pediatric deaths to 37. About 100 children die in an average flu season.

Justin Robert Latta died early Thursday in a single-vehicle crash after he drove too fast for the weather conditions and struck a tree, police say. STORY

SATURDAY IN THE STAR: Our Winchester at War series continues with three stories dealing with slavery and the civil rights battles that played out a century after the Emancipation Proclamation.
Winchester School Board Instruction Committee continues its discussion about changing the school calendar. A new proposal has the 2013-14 school year starting Aug. 12 and ending May 28.
Area school superintendents say they are adamantly opposed to a bill being proposed in the General Assembly that would require elementary and middle school students to do 30 minutes of physical education five days a week.
NOON NUMBER: (35) The number of points former Millbrook basketball star Erick Green scored to set a career high Thursday night in Virginia Tech's 74-58 loss to Virginia in Blacksburg. Green made 11 field goals, while the rest of his team made 8. Green is averaging 25.2 points a game and leads the nation in scoring.
