Our View: Wake-up call to citizenry

With pedestrian mall renovations now underway and a more proactive legislative agenda on City Council’s radar screen, it’s clear Winchester has proverbial bigger fish to fry than snow removal.

Nonetheless, a somewhat dilatory response — on the part of citizenry and (admittedly) city government alike — to the removal of snow and ice from sidewalks in the wake of last week’s winter weather has caught the attention of City Manager Dale Iman.

To be sure, the pertinent ordinance in City Code has been rarely enforced, but after observing a pedestrian fall this past week on a Winchester sidewalk, Mr. Iman has made it clear he wants folks to adhere to the statute in a timely fashion. “Our intent,” he said, “is not to issue a bunch of citations, but to get our sidewalks passable and safe.”

Consider this a wake-up call, sorely needed.
