Star staffers win VPA awards

Richmond — The Winchester Star received 11 awards at the Virginia Press Association’s annual meeting Saturday at the Hilton in Richmond.

First place awards went to Frances C. Lowe, life editor, for design of lifestyle pages; Scott Mason, photo editor, for breaking news photo; Ginger Perry, photographer, for sports news photo, and Jeff Taylor, photographer, for sports feature photo.

Taylor also won second place awards for a general news photo and a sports feature photo.

Sports editor Kevin Trudgeon won a second place for sports column writing.

Life reporter Laura McFarland received two second place awards, one for feature story writing and another for feature story portfolio.

Melissa Boughton, courts and cops reporter, won a second place for breaking news writing, and Sally Voth, business and politics reporter, received a third place for breaking news writing.

The Star, which has a circulation of about 20,000, competes among newspapers with circulations from 20,000 to 99,999.
