WINCHESTER — A city woman is facing up to a year in jail after lying about being attacked by three men in the bathroom of a local business.
Heather Marie Baker, 24, is charged with filing a false report — a misdemeanor — with the Winchester Police Department, according to a Tuesday media release.
She allegedly told officers on Dec. 13 that she was assaulted by three black males in the bathroom of an area business.
During a follow-up interview with Detective C. Coleman, Baker admitted to making up the story, the release states.
It is unclear why she did so, or what business she alleged that the incident occurred at.
Filing a false report is a Class 1 misdemeanor, punishable by up to a year in jail and up to a $2,500 fine.
Lauren Cummings, police spokeswoman, said in the release that filing false reports takes time and resources away from real cases.
“The Winchester Police Department will charge individuals who have committed this crime and prosecute them to the fullest extent of the law,” she added. “Those found guilty of the crime may also be ordered to pay full restitution for the cost of investigating the crime.”
