Frederick County was established in 1738 from part of the "Northern Neck" land grant by Charles II in 1649 to Thomas Lord Fairfax through inheritance. The county originally comprised 8,235 square miles. Ten other counties formed from this land. It is named for Frederick Lewis, Prince of Wales and eldest son of Great Britain's King George II.
It is bordered to the east by Clarke County, the south by Warren and Shenandoah counties, the west by Hampshire County (W.Va.), and to the north by Morgan and Berkeley counties. Frederick surrounds the city of Winchester. The Blue Ridge Mountains create the eastern boundary with Loudoun County.
Winchester is the county seat and is located about 72 miles west of Washington D.C.
Frederick was the birthplace of author Willia Cather and James W. Denver, for whom Denver, Colo., is named. It was the site of numerous Civil War battles.
