Winchester was the first settlement and first chartered city west of the Blue Ridge Mountains (1752). It was originally called Frederick Town, after the father of King George III, IT was renamed after the ancient capital of England by Col. James Wood, the city's founder.
Winchester is an independent city and is surrounded by Frederick County. Winchester is Frederick's county seat, but has a separate government and school system. Winchester is 9.3 square miles and is situated about 72 miles west of Washington D.C.
Winchester was home to country music legend Patsy Cline, famed polar explorer Adm. Richard E. Byrd and President George Washington. Winchester was the site of much Civil War activity and changed hands more than 70 times.
