General Shenandoah: Daughter of the Stars
FREE COMMUNITY LECTURE “Shenandoah: Daughter of the Stars” Today “Shenandoah,” as the name of our river, our region, and our university, is widely thought to mean “Daughter of the Stars” from its origins in Native American languages. But there is no linguistic evidence for this attribution. “Daughters of the Stars” remains a mystery. This talk traces the origins of this term and its association with “Shenandoah” to some of its most intriguing sources deep in Anglo-American literary and scientific culture of the nineteenth century. The result is a better understanding of the rich and meaningful origins of a word so beautiful as “Shenandoah” and its association with a stellar paradise. Your presenter for this lecture is Dr. Warren R. Hofstra is Stewart Bell Professor of History at Shenandoah University.
