General Kids and Cops Camp Car Wash, Bake Sale, and Yard Sale
The Winchester Police Department's Kids and Cops Camp Community Service Day is June 19, 2013. The kids will be holding a car wash, bake sale, and yard sale from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. It will be held in the parking lot of Molden Real Estate on Valley Avenue behind Ward Plaza. All of the proceeds from the sale will go to the Robert Shickle Memorial Scholarship Fund. Corporal Shickle passed away in 2010 after battling cancer. Donations are accepted.

General American Impressionism Lecture
Sunday, June 23 • 2 p.m. Scott Schweigert, curator of art and civilization at the Reading Public Museum, will discuss the emergence of artists’ colonies during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries in the fascinating lecture, “American Impressionism: The View from the Artists’ Colonies.” Schweigert will detail the effect that these colonies had on artists’ creativity, including the ability to collaborate, teach, and experiment in their work. The artists’ colonies of Cos Cob and Old Lyme in Connecticut; Cape Cod, Cape Ann, and Rockport in Massachusetts; and New Hope in Pennsylvania, among others, will be discussed. Before or after the lecture, visit the MSV Changing Exhibitions Gallery to tour American Impressionism: The Lure of the Artists’ Colony, a traveling exhibition from the Reading Public Museum. Lecture seating is limited; tickets will be available beginning at 10 a.m. Free to MSV Members; all others: $10, $8 youth/senior (includes gallery/garden admission).

General Lunch Box Lessons
Tuesday, April 23 • noon–1 p.m. Held in the picnic area by the garden entrance, these free and informal programs will be led by MSV Gardens and Grounds staff. Manager Bryan Shepherd will lead the April 23 and May 28 lessons and Assistant Manager Joel Lowery will lead the June 25 lesson. Bring your own bag lunch to enjoy or purchase lunch “to go” from the Museum Café. Free. Rain location: Garden Activity Room. APRIL 23: Bryan will discuss spring lawn care basics, including aeration and techniques for weed control using pre-emergent applications. MAY 28: Bryan Shepherd will present a 20-minute program that will highlight the types of vegetables ideal for Shenandoah Valley gardens and detail planting and harvesting techniques. JUNE 25: Joel Lowery will demonstrate pruning techniques and deadheading methods and discuss pest and disease control for roses.

Monday–Friday, June 24–28 • 10 a.m.–2 p.m. This camp for high school students (ages 14+) will encourage the creative spark in teen-art enthusiasts by offering them the opportunity to work with a variety of art mediums, interact with professional artists, and tour the MSV galleries. Each day will include two hands-on art exercises that will focus on painting, drawing, and creating three-dimensional art. A professional painter, a graphic artist, and a photographer will visit the camp. Participants will also visit artists’ studios. For artists of all skill levels. $50 per person (includes all materials); participants may bring lunch or purchase a box lunch.
